Plant of the Week: Lamium/Deadnettle

This week’s Plant of the Week is the Deadnettle. A member of the Lamium genus (of which there are many varieties), the Deadnettle is a hardy plant to consider when planning a water-savvy garden. The deadnettle/Lamium is not known as a tall plant, with typical heights of well under three feet in height.

This perennial plant, other than being known for its sturdiness in the backyard, is also known for its lovely flowers, which can be of various shades, including bright white and bright purple. Varieties of the deadnettle included spotted, purple, red and “Album.”

This plant/herb can be found all over the United States, in nearly every state. It is so common because of its ease of growth in less friendly climates. The deadnettle is a strong grower, and according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “can be weedy or invasive,” so take care not to plant it around more gentle plants!

According to Gardener’s World, “this easily grown perennial is one of the very best plants for growing in deep shade,” and is of a “nearly indestructible nature,” making it “invaluable as a ground cover in poor soils and shady areas.”

The leaves of some varieties of deadnettle can even be eaten… but check with your local nursery and agriculture experts first!

Though this plant is no cactus, it is known for its ability to survive in tough conditions and provide cover for the garden. The deadnettle grows best with some shade, and does not need to be overwatered. According to the Dayton Nursery, the deadnettle also prefers soils that have been well-drained.

As we all work to find ways to save water, it is a pleasure to learn about the vast variety of water-savvy plants available. The deadnettle/Lamium is one fascinating and aesthetically pleasing option to consider when orchestrating plans for a landscape change, and a future of water conservation. Planting a water-smart garden, while also using a smart sprinkler system (such as Cyber-Rain), equates to quite significant water savings.
