“Save Our Water” Saves Water

In honor of Smart Irrigation Month (the entire month of July), we will be highlighting fascinating ways in which individuals and groups are conserving water. Our last conservationist was Fabienne, who developed a simple yet carefully planned system by which water was recycled both inside and outside of the home. Now let’s take a look at Save Our Water/Save Our H20.

Save Our Water/Save Our H20 is a “statewide public education program” to help spread the word of water conservation, according to Communications Supervisor Lisa Lien-Mager, of the Association of California Water Agencies.
The Save Our H20 Web site is easy to use, and offers immediate suggestions on how to save water on a daily basis. Save Our Water’s “Top 10 Tips for Water Conservation” is as follows:

1.) Take shorter showers

2.) Turn off the faucet when brushing teeth

3.) Water your lawn only when it needs it

4.) Use a broom to clean driveways and sidewalks

5.) Adjust sprinklers so they don’t water driveways and sidewalks

6.) Only wash full loads of laundry

7.) Run the dishwasher only when  full

8.) Fix  leaky faucets and toilets

9.) Use  a shut-off nozzle on your hose

10.) Plant California-friendly trees and plants

Though some of the tips (such as No. 10) are specific to California, these tips can  be used in any location. These 10 tips are excellent starting points for those who would like to start conserving water, but  may not know just where to begin. Point No. 3 (watering lawns only when necessary) is also pertinent to the Cyber-Rain system, as the Cyber-Rain sprinkler controller automatically adjusts watering schedules when there are changes in the weather.

The Save Our Water site is very much interactive, and visitors are encouraged not only to learn how to save water, but to interface with the various water agencies of California, and to submit their own tips on how to save water. On the site, tips on saving water are offered for both inside and outside of the home, and in the workplace. Top 10 lists of water conservation tips are easily readable, and visitors can easily be added to the Save Our H20 mailing list. Rebates for water-saving devices can also be found through this site.

The site is family-friendly as well as easy to use; adults can find easy ways to curb water waste at home, while children can enjoy coloring books, games and water-saving tips, all under the “For Kids” section of the the Save Our Water site.

According to Lien-Mager, “The main focus is to educate Californians on the state’s many water challenges and encourage them to reduce their water use on a daily basis.”

We applaud Save Our H20 for taking the time to encourage conservation by education, and for showing how easy it is for everybody to save water.

Every drop counts!
