Los Angelenos Conserve In Droves

According to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the results of water conservation measure are already apparent.

The LADWP implemented specific watering restrictions and rate increases on June 1. Consumers who receive water from the LADWP have been directed since June 1 to only run sprinklers on Mondays and Thursdays. The Los Angeles Water Conservation Ordinance previously outlined when customers could run their outdoor irrigation systems (not between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.), that leaks needed to be fixed and that customers could only be served water in restaurants if they specifically asked for water.

By July 27, the LADWP reported the lowest June water demand in 32 years. According to a press release from the LADWP, single-family home water use was down nearly 13 percent from the period one year before. Governmental water use was down by 29.5 percent, while commerical water use was also down by 12.7 percent. Since June 2007, when Mayor Villaraigosa encouraged Los Angelenos to start seriously conserving water by at least 10 percent, all water use by LADWP consumers has fallen by 14.4 percent.

The Senior Assistant General Manager of the LADWP Water System, Jim McDaniel, stated that “I want to thank our customer for cutting their use — it’s paying off.” McDaniel encouraged consumers to “keep up the good work,” despite the challenge of curbing water use during the hot months of summer. LADWP CEO David Nahai stated that the new conservation statistics are very encouraging, though he also noted that “mandatory water conservation has only recently begun and now, with temperatures rising, we must continue efforts to reduce our water use. We still have a way to go.”

The LADWP has been encouraging conservation by offering many rebates for consumers who purchase water-efficient devices, including irrigation systems, higher efficiency clothes washing machines and low-flush toilets.

The LADWP also released an official Water Conservation Ordinance Activity Report. The report notes that nearly 5,000 occurrences of irrigation systems running between restricted hours were caught and eight instances of individuals running irrigation systems during times of rain were caught as well. The Cyber-Rain system can automatically shut off when rain is detected and can be programmed to cater to your specific irrigation needs by establishing a water-savvy schedule of irrigation. The Cyber-Rain controller can also be easily programmed to only run on the days and hours allowed, and can shut off in the rain. These are some incredibly useful tools for any homeowner or business owner. Whether or not you live in Los Angeles, the Cyber-Rain sprinkler controller makes it easy to keep in compliance with water regulations and helps you do your part for conservation by conserving as much water as possible. After all, water is our most precious resource!
